Punjab proposes new rescue stations, fire services in 39 tehsils

The Punjab government has proposed a series of development initiatives aimed at strengthening emergency response and rescue services across the province, including the establishment of fire services in 39 tehsils, new rescue stations and expanded emergency medical infrastructure.

According to budget documents for fiscal year 2026-27, significant allocations have been proposed for improving the operational capacity of the provincial emergency services network and enhancing disaster response capabilities.

The government has earmarked Rs300 million for the establishment of fire services in 39 tehsils, a move aimed at improving firefighting capabilities in areas that currently have limited emergency response infrastructure.

In addition, Rs244 million has been allocated for the establishment of new rescue stations to expand the reach of emergency services and reduce response times in underserved areas.

To strengthen the emergency healthcare workforce, the budget proposes allocating Rs74 million for a Rescue Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Internship Programme. Officials said the initiative is intended to train new emergency medical personnel and improve the quality of pre-hospital care.

The Punjab government has also proposed Rs40 million for the upgradation of the Emergency Services Academy, which serves as the province's primary training institution for rescue personnel.

As part of efforts to reduce operational costs and promote sustainable energy, Rs20 million has been allocated for the solarisation of rescue stations across Punjab.

The budget further includes Rs12 million for the procurement and deployment of emergency vehicles specifically designed to respond to crop and field fires, which frequently cause losses to farmers during harvesting seasons.

A separate allocation of Rs10 million has been proposed for the construction of an airstrip in Bhakkar to facilitate air ambulance operations. Officials said the project is expected to improve emergency medical evacuation capabilities in remote areas of southern Punjab.

Another Rs10 million has been earmarked for strengthening emergency services in Rawalpindi, while Rs5 million has been allocated for expanding the scope of emergency services at the tehsil level.

The government has also proposed Rs5 million for initiatives aimed at increasing the overall capacity of emergency services throughout Punjab.

To improve emergency call handling and dispatch operations, Rs4 million has been allocated for strengthening the Emergency Medical Dispatch System, which coordinates ambulance deployment and emergency response activities.

Officials said the proposed projects reflect the Punjab government's broader strategy to modernise rescue services, improve disaster preparedness and ensure faster emergency response across both urban and rural areas.

The development schemes will be considered as part of the provincial budget for 2026-27 and are expected to enhance the operational effectiveness of Rescue 1122 and other emergency response institutions across Punjab.
