Madonna celebrates 67th birthday at Iconic Palio di Siena horse race in Italy

Madonna marked her 67th birthday in spectacular fashion by attending the famed Palio di Siena horse race in Tuscany, Italy, a centuries-old event often described as “the world’s most intense horse race.”

The pop icon was joined by her family, including son Rocco, daughter Lourdes Leon, and her adopted twin daughters, Stella and Estere, 12, who she welcomed into her family in 2017.

The Palio di Siena, held twice a year in the city’s Piazza del Campo, is known for its high-energy competition and lack of conventional rules.

Riders compete bareback, armed with only reins and a racing whip, while wearing the distinctive colours of their neighbourhoods.

Spectators can expect horses and jockeys to battle each other as fiercely as they compete for the finish line, a tradition that dates back to 1633.

Madonna appeared in high spirits throughout the event, enjoying the spectacle alongside her children. Son Rocco, 25, shared the celebration with his mother, dressed casually in a vest, while eldest daughter Lourdes, 28, mingled with her siblings, soaking in the excitement of the historic event.

The singer was also seen keeping cool amid the Tuscan heat with a traditional Italian fan, maintaining her characteristic style and poise.

The Queen of Pop was not the only celebrity to attend the Palio this year. British singer Sting, 73, and actor Eddie Redmayne, 43, were also spotted among the cheering crowds, enjoying the three-lap race under sunny skies and temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.

Redmayne observed the festivities from a balcony, while Sting remained focused on the thrilling competition below. Before the race begins, the city is decorated with colourful flags and banners, with the highlight being the display of the Palio, a symbolic banner dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The race itself, lasting approximately 90 seconds, challenges riders to navigate cobblestone streets transformed with packed clay for safer footing. The first horse to cross the finish line wins the coveted Palio, which the victorious neighbourhood celebrates with great fanfare.

This year, the winning horse was Valdimontone, sending the crowd into a frenzy as spectators cheered the jockey’s victory. Travel experts and journalists alike have described the race as uniquely perilous, with some riders occasionally thrown from their horses during the sharp turns of the piazza.

The allowance for riders to use whips on both their horses and rivals adds to the race’s legendary reputation.

Madonna’s attendance at the Palio di Siena combined family celebration with cultural immersion, as she witnessed one of Italy’s most historic and vibrant traditions.
