TikTok rolls out new security checkup tool for users

TikTok has launched a new "Security Checkup" tool, designed to help users easily review and update their account security settings from a single screen, the company announced this week. This feature is similar to the security checkups offered by TikTok's competitor, Instagram, and tech giant Google.

To access the tool, users can go to their profile, select "Settings and privacy," then tap on "Security and permissions."

The Security Checkup guides users step-by-step through TikTok's security features, encouraging them to enable additional security measures for enhanced protection. Users can link their phone number and email address to the app, ensuring they have a backup method to log in if they lose access to their account. They can also enable two-step verification to add an extra layer of security when logging in from an unfamiliar device.

Additionally, the tool emphasizes the importance of periodically reviewing the devices logged into the account and removing any that are no longer in use or seem suspicious. It also suggests enabling device-based authentication, such as Face ID or Touch Unlock, for a quicker and more secure login experience.

TikTok also monitors for unusual behavior and flags any potential security issues within the "Security and permissions" settings for users to review.

This new feature rollout comes at a time of uncertainty about TikTok's future in the U.S., with President Donald Trump having extended the deadline for a potential TikTok ban by 75 days in January. Despite this uncertainty, TikTok continues to enhance its app with new features, including improved safety measures for teens and a revamped desktop experience aimed at competing with YouTube.
