Karachi becomes most polluted city in world

Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, is facing a severe air pollution crisis, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Saturday.

According to the Air Quality Index (AQI), a global measure of air quality, Karachi has become the most polluted city in the world, surpassing even some of the most notorious smoggy cities like Beijing and Delhi.

The AQI recorded a staggering 239 particulate meters (PM) in the city, which is more than nine times the safe limit of 25 PM recommended by the World Health Organization. The PM level indicates the concentration of tiny particles in the air that can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems.

The AQI also reported alarming levels of pollution in specific areas of the city, such as 207 PM near the U.S. Consulate General and 274 PM near the Railway Quarters Lalazar. Even in areas with relatively lower PM levels, the air quality was still considered harmful to human health, as the AQI categorizes anything above 100 PM as unhealthy.

Experts have warned that prolonged exposure to such polluted air can lead to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and premature death.

They have advised citizens to take precautions, such as using masks when leaving home, avoiding outdoor activities, especially for children and elderly people, and seeking medical attention if they experience any symptoms of air pollution-related illnesses.
