Naqvi, Momeni discuss bilateral ties, regional situation in Tehran

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met his Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni at Iran's Interior Ministry in Tehran on Monday, with the two sides discussing Pakistan-Iran relations, ongoing bilateral cooperation and the latest regional situation.

Naqvi visited the Iranian Interior Ministry after arriving in Tehran earlier in the day on an official visit. Momeni had received the Pakistani interior minister at the airport.

During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed progress on cooperation between the interior ministries of Pakistan and Iran and discussed steps to further strengthen coordination in different areas.

The latest developments in the region also came under discussion as Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement with Iran amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Momeni appreciated Pakistan's efforts for regional peace and stability and thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their role in efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.

"We are grateful for Pakistan's continuous efforts to establish peace in the region," the Iranian interior minister said.

Momeni also described his recent visit to Pakistan as productive and expressed satisfaction with the growing engagement between Islamabad and Tehran.

His visit to Pakistan in July included meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior officials. During those talks, Pakistan reiterated its commitment to regional peace and said it would continue playing the role of a mediator and facilitator amid tensions in the Gulf.

During Monday's meeting, Naqvi said Pakistan attached importance to its relations with Iran and expressed confidence that bilateral ties would continue to strengthen.

"Bilateral relations will be further strengthened in the future," Naqvi said.

The two sides also reviewed the implementation of ongoing cooperation between their interior ministries and discussed ways to advance bilateral coordination.

Monday's meeting came against the backdrop of continuing regional tensions and Pakistan's diplomatic contacts with Iran.

Naqvi arrived in Tehran as Islamabad maintained engagement with Iranian officials over bilateral relations and developments affecting regional security. Iranian media said his latest trip was focused primarily on bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Iranian media also reported that Naqvi was not carrying a message from Washington to Tehran and would not take an Iranian message to the United States during the visit, while Pakistani sources said regional developments would form part of his discussions.

Pakistan has maintained diplomatic contacts with Tehran throughout the months-long Iran-US confrontation and has repeatedly called for dialogue and de-escalation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said during Momeni's July visit to Islamabad that Pakistan would continue to play the role of an "honest and sincere mediator and facilitator" and remained committed to regional peace and stability.

The Iranian side has also publicly acknowledged those efforts. During his July visit, Momeni expressed appreciation for diplomatic efforts by Pakistan's leadership and said Iran wanted to expand cooperation with Pakistan in security, trade, border connectivity and other areas.

Naqvi's latest visit comes as Iran and the United States remain at odds over the conflict and restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard on Monday warned of changes in its military response, including the possible use of new weapons and targets, if the United States launches further attacks. The warning came as tensions continued around the Strait of Hormuz and diplomatic efforts remained underway to prevent another major escalation.

Against this backdrop, Monday's talks between Naqvi and Momeni focused on maintaining close Pakistan-Iran coordination while advancing bilateral cooperation and efforts aimed at regional stability.

Both ministers expressed a desire to maintain the momentum in relations and strengthen cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
