Amazon to shut down Android app store, discontinue digital currency 'Coins'

Amazon will shut down its Android app store on August 20, 2025, according to a notice sent to developers. The company also announced that it will discontinue its Coins digital currency, which was used to purchase apps and games in the store.

On its support page, Amazon stated, “Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device. We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins program on August 20, 2025.” The company confirmed that any remaining Coins in users’ accounts will be refunded.

Amazon explained that only a small group of customers used the app store on non-Amazon devices. “We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it,” a spokesperson stated.

The app store will remain operational on Amazon’s own devices, including Fire TV and Fire Tablets.

This move follows a 2022 discovery by McAfee Labs, which found that an app on Amazon’s store was disguised as a health tool to spread malware.

Amazon has been trying to compete with Google by creating an alternative app store ecosystem since 2011. The company also attempted to drive its now-defunct Fire Phone project using its own app store.

Additionally, Amazon announced last year that it will end support for its app store on Windows, which offered Android apps, starting March 5, 2025. The Windows program was launched in 2021.
