Heavy rains forecast as eighth monsoon spell starts today 

Monsoon rains in the country are not over yet as the eighth monsoon spell, which will start from today, will last until August 30 and will produce rains throughout the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday.  

The Met Office said that three monsoon systems were going to enter Pakistan. 

Under the influence of these systems, torrential rains were expected in Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) from August 23 to August 25.

Heavy rains would lead to flooding in cities of Punjab and KP namely Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Narowal, Gujranwala, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Battagram, Abbottabad, Swabi, Mardan, Malakand and Hazara division, the weather department said, adding there were also fears of landslides in the mountainous areas of AJK and KP while deluge in the streams and nullahs of Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Dera Ismael Khan.

It further said that widespread heavy rains were also likely in Sindh, including Karachi, from August 27 to August 30. 

Glacier bursts in Gilgit-Baltistan

Glacier burst wreaks havoc in GB One-kilometer stretch of a road was washed away, while an area spreading over seven kilometers turned into a lake after a glacier burst in district Ghizar of Gilgit-Baltistan, cutting off road links between several villages. 

Shindoor Road in district Ghizar was closed for traffic following a landslide in the area.

However, 200 people stranded in Raoshan village were rescued.

Soon after the glacier burst, the personnel of the Pakistan Army swung into action and shifted the people living in low-lying areas on the banks of Gilgit River to safe locations.  

GB Chief Minister Gulbar Khan too reached Ghizar to inspect relief and rescue activities.
