Punjab assembly passes resolution against governor

The Punjab government Friday passed a resolution against the Punjab Governor’s step to de-notify the Punjab Chief Minister Ch Pervaiz Elahi, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The opposition including PML-N and PPP lawmakers staged a walkout even before the resolution against the governor was presented.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) MPA Mian Muhammad Aslam Iqbal presented the resolution in the house, calling on President Arif Alvi to act against the province's governor. The resolution was approved by the treasure benches unanimously.

“The Punjab Assembly approves under the rules and regulations that according to the constitution, the supreme power rests with the Almighty God and the powers are with the people.”

In the resolution, the government benches deplored Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman's "illegal" move to remove Parvez Elahi as the chief minister.

The resolution observed that Punjab is being invaded by the imported government and the house condemns the attempts to destabilize the majority government. The resolution maintained that people, who sold their conscience, have initiated an undemocratic invasion of the house and tried to destabilize the government.

It adds that the governor overstepped the authority of the chief minister and the cabinet on Dec 22 and revoked the privilege of the house.

The President of Pakistan is requested to take notice of this shameful act and immediately take steps to remove the governor from the post, it added.

The resolution said that the house expresses confidence in Parvez Elahi’s leadership and ratifies Speaker's ruling.
