NA speaker likely to decide on PTI resignations soon

January 23, 2023 08:41 PM

National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf and senior officers of the National Assembly Secretariat have held deliberations on the matter of PTI members' resignations, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.

According to sources, the requests to withdraw resignations from PTI members and the constitutional as well as the legal status of the application received via email and WhatsApp came under discussion.

As every member's handwritten resignation is necessary, every member should send written application for withdrawing the resignation, the insiders believed.

No handwritten resignation request has been received so far, they said, adding that an important decision of the speaker on 20 to 25 more resignations is likely.

Last week, the Election Commission of Pakistan de-notified dozens of lawmakers of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf following the receipt of the de-notification request by the National Assembly speaker.

The ECP action came a day after the National Assembly speaker told the media the resignation have been accepted after the due course.

Pervaiz Ashraf dispelled the impression that he accepted the resignations of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MNAs after ex-PM Imran Khan hinted at his return to the lower house of the parliament.

“A PTI delegation visited me and I accepted the resignations after the due course, he said in reply to a question. He added many PTI members contacted him and said they are still pondering over the matter of resignation.

He said he wanted the parliamentarians returned to the parliament. However, Imran Khan announced that he would contest the by-election for all the vacant seats and the ex-MNAs will run his election campaign in their constituencies.

Last year, the ex-PM won six National Assembly seats for his party in a by-election. The PTI had resigned en-masse from the lower house of parliament following the ouster of PTI chief Imran Khan in April.
