NDMA warns of increased risk of avalanches in hilly, upper regions of Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) on Friday issued an alert warning of an increased risk of avalanches in hilly and upper regions of the country, as fresh spells of snowfall are expected over the coming days.

According to a weather advisory issued by the NEOC, westerly winds are affecting upper and northern areas, with more snowfall likely during the next 24 to 48 hours. Heavy snowfall is forecast for the hilly regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, while snowfall is also expected in the northern and hilly districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The advisory warned that the risk of avalanches has increased due to recent snowfall and may persist after further snow accumulation. Avalanches are likely in upper areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Balochistan. Authorities said snowfall could also disrupt traffic flow on roads connecting hilly areas.

The NEOC further cautioned that a severe cold wave is expected to grip most parts of the country after January 24. In addition, dense fog is likely during night and morning hours in the plains of Punjab and upper Sindh, potentially affecting visibility and travel.

The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of snowfall and fog. If travel is essential, commuters are urged to take precautionary measures and strictly follow the instructions of the local administration, traffic police and law enforcement agencies.

Provincial Disaster Management Authorities have been directed to remain prepared for emergency situations and ensure the timely availability of machinery and resources. Snow removal equipment and response teams have also been instructed to stay on high alert.

The NEOC said it is continuously monitoring the situation and sharing timely information with relevant agencies. Citizens have been advised to use the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application for updates on weather conditions, potential hazards and recommended safety measures.
