Bollywood’s He-Man Dharmendra dies at 89
Industry mourns as final films await release
Dharmendra, the veteran Bollywood icon affectionately called the industry’s ‘He-Man’, died on Monday at the age of 89.
He had been under medical care in Mumbai and was placed on life support prior to his passing.
He would have turned 90 on December 8. Family officials have yet to issue a full statement as tributes began to pour in.
A host of film industry figures gathered at the Pawan Hans cremation ground in Juhu, Mumbai, where Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Hema Malini and Esha Deol were among those photographed paying respects.
Filmmaker Karan Johar, who directed Dharmendra in his final film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, posted an emotional message on Instagram, calling it “the end of an era".
Sharing a photo of the late megastar, he wrote: “It is an end of an ERA….. a massive mega star… the embodiment of a HERO in mainstream cinema… incredibly handsome and the most enigmatic screen presence … he is and will always be a bonafide Legend of Indian Cinema… defining and richly present in the pages of cinema history … but mostly he was the best human being… he was so loved by everyone in our industry …. He only had immense love and positivity for everyone … his blessings, his hug and his incredible warmth will be missed more than words can describe …. Today there is a gaping hole in our industry … a space that can never be filled by anyone … there will always be the one and only DHARAMJI… we love you kind Sir…. We will miss you so much…. The heavens are blessed today…. It will always be my blessing to have worked with you…. And my heart says with respect, reverence and love…. Abhi Na jao chodke…. Ke dil abhi bhara nahi……OM SHANTI."
Other Bollywood icons also shared their condolences on Instagram. Kajol wrote: “The OG of the Good Man is gone and the world is poorer for it… somehow it seems like we are only losing the good people in it. Kind to the core and loved always. RIP Dharamji.. with love always.”
Farhan Akhtar wrote: “A big, big loss to the entire film world. To those who make movies and to those who watch them, Dharam ji will forever remain irreplaceable. Thank you for six decades of entertainment. We are fortunate to have experienced your warmth, your kindness, your generosity, your charm, your intensity and your wit, on and off the screen. Deepest condolences to the Deol Family.”
Shilpa Shetty also penned down a heartfelt note: “I’ve had the privilege of working with many talented actors, but none with a bigger heart than yours. Your talent, charm and dashing looks were just the beginning but your humility, simplicity and kindness was so inspiring. You were a true original, a shining star that touched so many hearts. Rest in peace you special soul.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Ajay Devgan also posted stories to pay a tribute to the always-beloved Chupke Chupke actor.
Dharam Paaji made his screen debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and built a storied career across decades. He delivered acclaimed performances in Phool Aur Patthar, Seeta Aur Geeta, Ankhen and the blockbuster Sholay, demonstrating a range from action to comedy and family drama. His rugged persona and screen charisma made him a defining presence of his era.
His death comes ahead of two anticipated projects. Ikkis, a biographical war drama produced by Maddock Films and directed by Sriram Raghavan, features Dharmendra as the protagonist’s grandfather; the film stars Agastya Nanda and Jaideep Ahlawat and is scheduled for release on December 25. Sunny Deol publicly praised his father’s performance after the trailer’s release. Dharmendra was also reported to be involved in Maine Pyaar Kiya Phir Se with Arbaaz Khan, a reunion that had excited fans.
As the industry and public mourn, preparations for farewell rites and formal family announcements are underway. The film fraternity has promised tributes, and officials associated with Dharmendra’s final projects will clarify release plans and related arrangements in due course.
