Sindh declares May 1 public holiday

The Sindh government has declared May 1 a public holiday across the province to mark International Labour Day.

According to a notification from the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department, all government and semi-government offices will remain closed. The holiday will also extend to educational institutions, meaning schools, colleges, and universities will shut their doors for the day.

Labour Day, observed worldwide on May 1, isn’t just another day off — it’s a powerful reminder of the blood, sweat, and solidarity that paved the road to fair labour practices. From protests to policy changes, May Day has historically symbolised the battle against exploitation and the ongoing fight for workers’ rights.

By aligning with global traditions, Sindh’s decision not only honours the working class but also reinforces the pressing need for safe, equitable, and dignified work environments. In a world still grappling with economic disparities, such gestures — though symbolic — keep the spirit of labour movements alive and burning.
