PSL Hungama: Gladiators under fire

February 25, 2023 02:13 AM

Quetta Gladiators has come under fire after their defeat by Islamabad United in the 13th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight.

Analysts at PSL Hungama heaped praise on Islamabad United. Cricket ace Muhammad Yusuf said that the way Islamabad United played cricket today is the class. After the loss of 4 wickets in the beginning, the way Azam Khan and Asif Ali played the innings, the total of 220 runs was not a small thing.

Ex-pacer Muhammad Asif said Islamabad United played a fearless inning. In today's T20 format, the way Azam Khan played, his class show was amazing, he added. Azam Khan wreaked havoc with a quickfire 97-run knock before bowlers led Islamabad United to a dominating 63-run victory over Quetta Gladiators. Muhammad Asif said Azam has been playing in leagues all over the world and he used his experience.

Asif stressed Quetta Gladiators come only to play matches … they have nothing to do with showing performance.   The Gladiators had a poor start to their pursuit as the side lost three wickets for a mere 26 runs in the fourth over with all their top-three batters falling cheaply.

Muhammad Yusuf said that the top order of Gladiators failed again. Set to chase a mammoth 221, the Gladiators could only score 157 before being bundled out in the final over after a brief retaliation by Mohammad Hafeez. Following Hafeez’s dismissal, Sarfaraz stitched a cautious 32-run partnership with Iftikhar Ahmed.

Sarfaraz’s dismissal triggered a match-defining collapse in the Gladiators’ batting lineup, which eventually bundled out in the final over with their notable run-getter Iftikhar also walking back to the pavilion in the 19th. Asif said Gladiators don't have any plan.

He continued: “The captain has to decide whether to play with such fear or to play with a good strike rate. Partnerships have to be built, otherwise, this losing streak will continue. The management will have to think whether to make Sarfraz the captain or give someone else a chance.”
