The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has prepared the draft of the amended NAB Ordinance.
According to the amended draft, the word unextendable would be removed from Section 6 of the NAB Ordinance and tenure of the NAB chairman would be extendable. The amendment would allow extension in the tenures of NAB deputy chairman and NAB prosecutor general. Section 7 of the NAB Ordinance would be amended to remove the word unextendable with regard to tenure of NAB deputy chairman and Section 8 would be amended to remove the word unextendable vis-à-vis the tenure of the NAB prosecutor general.
After the amendments, federal and provincial tax and levy matters will not fall under the NAB jurisdiction. All tax and levy related inquiries and investigations will be handed over to relevant departments and ministries. All tax and levy-related cases will be transferred from accountability courts to criminal courts. NAB would not oversee tax and levy matters of public office holders other than corruption cases.
Public office holders will not be affected by violation of rules and regulations in government projects unless they are found involved in making financial gains from the projects. No action will be taken against the public office holders on the basis of opinion or report unless a solid evidence of financial corruption by them is found.
A copy of the amended draft has been sent to the opposition political parties. This amended draft will be presented to the Parliamentary Committee on Legislation on Monday. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi is the head of this committee.
