Heavy rains buffet Punjab cities as death toll rises to 27

The powerful monsoon on Saturday battered many cities across Pakistan with Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad worst affected in Punjab where many areas were facing flood-like situation, disruption in routine life and submerging of link roads, with death toll in the province rising 27, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab Director General (DG) Umar Abbas Mela said that so far 27 people had lost their lives while 185 had been injured during the second spell of monsoon rains. 

Briefing the media at the PDMA headquarters in Lahore, he said that the highest amount of rainfall was recorded in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Gujranwala. “Torrential rains were also reported from Jhelum, Narowal, Sialkot and other cities of the province,” he said, adding that presently water levels at Kalabagh and Mangla Dams were normal. “The situation in the River Jhelum and River Sutlej is not alarming either,” he said and added that water had receded in the River Ravi at Shahdara.

Mela said last year it had been witnessed that rainwater remained accumulated on roads for several days. “But not this time as machinery was procured to drain out the water,” he said. 

The PDMA DG informed that the third monsoon spell, which was approaching the country, would not be as strong. “Hence, there will be no flood-like situation. However, we need to exercise caution,” he asserted. 

Mela said that the Authority had deployed machinery necessary to drain out water. He said that still people needed to take precautionary measures. “They should avoid staying in buildings, which are in dilapidated condition, stay away from electric poles and wires, avoid going near rivers, streams and nullahs.

Chenab River in high flood near Jhang

The Chenab River remained in a high-flood state near Jhang on Saturday as torrential rains lashed several parts of Punjab.

According to details, a flood surge of 200,000 cusecs began passing through the Riwaz Bridge.

Deputy Commissioner Jhang Babar Sahibdin and other high-ranking government officials visited low-lying areas and Sayanwala adjacent to the River Chenab and the flood relief camp established by Rescue 1122.

The protective embankment adjacent to the city and the Rescue 1122 flood relief camp were inspected, and security measures were reviewed.

Five die in Lahore, Chunian

Five people including two women died while several injured in roof collapsed incidents in Lahore and Chunian.

The roof of an old house in dilapidated condition caved during amid heavy rain in Railway Colony in Lahore’s Garhi Shahu area, in which three people including two women died and another injured.

The deceased were a couple and their daughter. Another daughter survived the tragedy.

Similarly, in another roof collapse incident at Bedian Road in Lahore, three people were reported injured.

In Chunian, two people died and three injured when roof of a house came down near Adda Dhang Shah on Depalpur Road amid heavy downpour this morning.

The deceased were identified as 65-year-old Muhammad Nazeer and 10-year-old Shoaib Ali, the rescue personnel said.

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in several cities across Punjab on Saturday.

In Shakargarh, drains have been flooded while road links between 25 villages have been severed. 

Floodwaters from Koh-e-Suleman Range have washed away barrages, while in Kot Qaiserani and Taunsa Sharif, rainwater has entered people’s homes.

Several homes have been swept away by floodwaters. 

Rain in Lahore 

In Lahore, WASA was on high alert after heavy rain inundated roads and low-lying areas on Saturday.

The highest amount of rainfall was recorded at Saggian, totaling 60 millimeters, while Upper Mall received 52.2 millimeters, Lakshmi Chowk 44.6 millimeters, Jail Road 23.3 millimeters, Gulberg Head Office 17 millimeters, Mughalpura 24.6 millimeters, Tajpura 26.4 millimeters, Nishtar Town 17 millimeters, Chowk Nakhuda 40.2 millimeters, Pani Wala Talab 24.2 millimeters, Farrukhabad 25.8 millimeters, Gulshan-e-Ravi 31.8 millimeters, Allama Iqbal Town 13.4 millimeters, Samanabad 39 millimeters, Johar Town 15.2 millimeters, Defence Road 7.6 millimeters, Shadipura 27.6 millimeters, Kahna 10.8 millimeters, Manawan 24.6 millimeters and Allama Iqbal International Airport 5 millimeters. 

Rain in other cities

Torrential rain left Sargodha and its outskirts drenched, while intermittent rainfall was reported from Faisalabad.

In Pindi Bhattian, several feeders were tripped while roads and low-lying areas turned into pools of water after heavy rain lashed the city and its surroundings.  

In several areas, water entered people’s homes.

Kharian and its surroundings also received rain, which turned the weather pleasant.

Several feeders were tripped, while roads and low-lying areas were flooded after heavy rain pounded Sarai Mughal and its suburbs.

Thundershowers were also reported from Muridke, Shahkot and Manawala.

It rained cats and dogs in Phoolnagar, Narowal, Phalia and Sahiwal, leaving several areas submerged.

Likewise, light rain was reported from Gujranwala.

Karachi receives rain 

Different localities of Karachi, too, received thundershowers during the last 24 hours.

Rain was reported from North Karachi, Rasheedabad, Power House Chowrangi, UP Morr, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulshan-e-Maimar, New Karachi and Surjani Town.      

Rain in Sindh 

Water levels in the River Indus are likely to cross 200,000 cusecs mark following downpour in different parts of Sindh where low-lying areas and fields have been flooded.   

PDMA issues rain alert 

On the other hand, there are fears of landslides, cloudbursts and floods in nullahs and streams in Mansehra as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in KP has issued an alert for more monsoon showers in the area during the next three days. 

The situation has forced the district administration to cancel four festivals to be held in Kaghan Valley from today until July 29.

More rain forecast 

The Met Office on Saturday said that thundershowers are expected in Sindh, southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Punjab and northeastern Balochistan during the next 24 hours.

It said that isolated heavy falls are also expected in Sindh and southern Punjab during the period.
