German Chancellor Friedrich Merz calls Iran war unnecessary and pointless

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described the war against Iran as completely pointless and unnecessary, warning that the conflict could lead to wider global instability, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters in Berlin after a European Union summit, Mr Merz said the growing tensions were already affecting not only Europe, but also Asia and the United States.

He said Europe must remain united in order to deal with rising international threats and changing economic conditions. The Chancellor added that military confrontation was not the answer and called for renewed diplomatic efforts.

According to Merz, leaders of the EU’s 27 member states spent two days in detailed discussions on the Iran conflict and other pressing global challenges.

He said the aim of the emergency meeting was to develop a common European strategy to respond to the crisis as well as worsening economic pressures around the world.

Merz also said Europe must adapt to new international realities and increasingly difficult economic circumstances.

Officials attending the summit stressed the need to resolve the Iran crisis through negotiations rather than war.
