♦ A big jolt for the inflation-hit people as the NEPRA approves hike in electricity prices by Rs7.90 per unit; the increase, which has been announced under the fuel adjustment for the month of May will put an additional burden of over Rs113 billion on consumers.
♦ Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) surpasses all other parties by winning 2, 189 seats in the first phase of local bodies’ (LBs) elections in Sindh. According to unofficial results, the party was leading comfortably in 14 districts of the province till last reports came in; Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) manages to grab 64 seats and stands at second position; Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) with 43 seats comes third while PTI wins 13 seats; Jiyalas dance to drumbeats to celebrate the party’s win.
♦ PPP candidates also win quite comfortably in Tharparkar; same is the case in Sukkur where out of 32 union committees’ seats, the party wins in 29; the party grabs 14 seats in the municipal corporation of Mirpurkhas; out of 16 municipal committee wards in Kandhkot, 15 fall in the PPP’s lap; likewise, the party candidates remain successful on 27 union councils’ seats of the municipal committee, Shikarpur; similarly eight PPP candidates register wins in eight municipal committee seats of Umerkot.
♦ Sindh Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah’s son wins his seat in Rohri; Syed Kameel Haider manages to win Union Council-27, Naseerabad seat by receiving 357 votes.
♦ Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon says that the PPP inflicted a ‘humiliating’ defeat on its opponents in the local bodies’ polls.
♦ PTI stuns its opponents as its candidate Fazl Maula beats Hussain Ahmed, the joint candidate of all opposition parties in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly, including Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), in PK-Swat by-poll by a big margin; the seat had fallen vacant on account of the death of Awami National Party MPA Waqar Khan.
