PMD issues GLOF alert for KP northern districts

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has issued a warning over possible glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the upper parts of the province, as rising temperatures and expected heavy rainfall increase the risk of flooding in mountainous areas.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said temperatures across most districts of the province are expected to remain high until May 31, accelerating the melting of snow and glaciers.

According to the provincial emergency operations centre, upper districts including Chitral, Dir, Swat and Kohistan are likely to receive heavy rainfall, with some areas expected to experience intense downpours.

The PDMA warned that a sudden temperature rise combined with rain could trigger glacier lake outburst floods and flash floods in vulnerable mountainous regions.

District administrations have been directed to ensure emergency preparedness measures and strengthen monitoring in sensitive areas, while relevant agencies have been instructed to keep early warning systems active.

Rescue departments and local authorities were also told to ensure the availability of machinery and emergency response equipment in case of flooding or road blockages.

Officials warned that strong water flows in streams and rivers could sweep away vehicles and advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel and postpone visits to dangerous or flood-prone areas.

Residents were urged to move livestock and valuable belongings to safer locations and strictly follow official warnings and safety instructions.

The PDMA said all rescue teams, district administrations and relevant institutions had been instructed to remain in constant coordination and stay prepared for rapid response in case of emergencies.
