JK Rowling responds to Emma Watson's interview

JK Rowling has responded to Emma Watson’s recent viral interview by sharing a parody video mocking a key moment in the actor’s remarks about their strained relationship.

Watson, known globally for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, appeared earlier this week on the podcast On Purpose with Jay Shetty. In the wide-ranging interview, Watson opened up about the personal and public fallout between herself and Rowling, stemming from their opposing views on transgender rights.

The actor, along with her Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, has publicly supported trans rights. Rowling, in contrast, has drawn widespread criticism for a series of comments perceived as transphobic—a label she strongly denies.

On Friday (26 September), Rowling appeared to react to the interview by reposting a parody video made by online comedian IntelLady, which spoofed Watson’s emotionally charged statements about the author. In her caption, Rowling wrote: “I’m here for all the spoofs,” appearing to dismiss the actor’s conciliatory tone.

During the podcast, Watson reflected on the rift, saying:

“I think the thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible.”
She added that while she strongly believes in trans rights, she also values the personal relationship she once had with Rowling:

“I will always believe in open dialogue. I don’t think holding the views I do negates the love and appreciation I have for Jo. I just don’t see it as an either-or situation.”
Watson’s comments were notable for their emotional nuance, as she expressed hope that people with differing views could still treat each other with kindness and respect.

However, Rowling has been far more blunt in her stance toward Watson and other cast members. Last year, she declared she would not forgive Watson, Radcliffe, or Grint for speaking out against her, telling them publicly to “save their apologies.” She has also said she would “happily” go to prison for misgendering a transgender person, further deepening the controversy.

Watson’s appearance on Shetty’s podcast was a rare public interview. The Little Women star has largely stepped away from acting and press engagements in recent years. In the interview, she also discussed a range of other issues, including her experiences growing up in the spotlight, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and her broader views on activism and empathy.
