PML-N to thwart PTI bid to muzzle media

A delegation of media associations met Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif in Karachi, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.

The PML-N president expressed reservations about the proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) and vowed to thwart the government's bid to pass the legislation related to the PMDA.

Media freedom is a must for democracy and his party will not let such legislation sail through the parliament, he added.

Representatives of All Pakistan Newspapers Society, Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors, Broadcasters Association and Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors held the meeting with the PML-N president.

The PMDA is the government's attempt to gag the media, he said, adding that the opposition will resist the government move to muzzle the media with full force.

The opposition parties will be taken into confidence, Shehbaz said, adding that a consultative meeting with leaders of the political parties and other stakeholders will be held to devise a comprehensive campaign for media freedom.
