Special Assistant to Prime Minister for Accountability Shahzad Akbar has said that the funds for New Islamabad Airport project were used for Chaudhry Sugar Mill. He added the loan for Chaudhry Sugar Mill was acquired through fake accounts.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday, Akbar said funds worth $560 million were received by Sharif family from the contract of New Islamabad Airport. He transpired that the Chaudhry Sugar Mill is a biggest corporate fraud in Pakistan's history. “The contract of the Islamabad Airport was awarded to a close relative of the Sharif family."
The special assistant maintained the fake accounts were opened in the name of Qazi family. He revealed that Maryam Nawaz had played a vital role in the whole process. “Passports were used for Telegraphic Transfer transactions," he said.
Akbar said, “At least 45 percent shares of the company were transferred in the name of Nawaz Sharif and then to Maryam Nawaz."
The special assistant disclosed that the Sharif family took loans from different sources, including the Punjab Bank which had not been returned. He said accounts were opened abroad with funds worth 15.37 million dollars by the Sharif family. “This case is an example of worst corruption," he pointed out.
He said most of the accused in the said case have fled abroad and according to the country's law a case cannot be initiated in their absence which is an irony.
Shahzad Akbar said, “There are several unanswered questions in Chaudhry Sugar Mill case like Sharif family's relations with Qazi family."
To a question, he said Nawaz Sharif is hesitant to provide the details of his treatment in London to the Pakistani government which raise suspicions. “Nawaz Sharif's bail duration has expired and still the Sharif family has not provided the relevant details to the government."
