GLOF alert issued for Gilgit-Baltistan amid heavy rain forecast

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Gilgit-Baltistan, warning of potential natural disasters as a fresh spell of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and windstorms is expected to hit the region this week.

The PMD cautioned that the changing weather conditions could significantly increase the risk of glacial lake outbursts, particularly in glacier-prone areas, raising the threat of floods and landslides.

Authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert and to take all necessary preventive measures to avoid loss of life and property. Local residents have also been urged to stay vigilant and exercise caution, especially in areas vulnerable to GLOF incidents.

The alert is part of a broader effort to mitigate climate-induced hazards in the region, where melting glaciers and extreme weather patterns have become increasingly frequent due to global warming.
