3 suspended as man dies in railway bridge collapse in Khanewal

A man died and a woman received critical injuries when a pedestrian railway bridge collapsed at Khanewal Junction, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.

According to details, the bridge was in poor condition. Deceased Ikram was performing his duties as a senior ticket checker (STC) when part of the bridge came down.

Soon after receiving the report of the incident, Rescue 1122 team reached the spot and shifted the dead and injured woman to hospital.

Sources further revealed that the railway bridge was constructed before the birth of Pakistan and was the only bridge being used by passengers to cross the track.

Hanif Abbasi suspends three officials

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi on Friday suspended three officers of Pakistan Railways for negligence and inefficiency, which led to Railway passenger bridge incident at Khanewal Railway Junction.

The suspended officers include Divisional Engineer Abid Razziq working in BS-18 and an Assistant Sub Engineer of BS-17 Raja Yousaf and BS-16 Bridge Inspector Multan Mohammad Adil.

The Federal Minister for Railways took notice of the incident immediately and directed relevant officials to take strict action against those who were involved in this incident.

He also constituted a high-level inquiry committee comprising Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pakistan Railways Amir Ali Baloch, Inspector-General of Raiways Police and Divisional Superintendent Lahore.

The Committee already departed for Khanewal.
