Police Tuesday paid tribute to martyrs on the 11th anniversary of a terrorist attack on Sri Lanka Cricket Team near Liberty Chowk of Lahore.

The commemorations commenced with prayers, followed by guard of honour and wreath-laying ceremonies at the graves of martyrs. Senior officials laid stress on maintaining rule of law and following in the footsteps of veterans.

“Police have a history of bravery. Our soldiers rendered matchless sacrifices for the sake of peace. People will remember our sacrifices,” DIG Operation Babar Saeed said while paying tribute to the martyrs.

The DIG reiterated police department’s resolve to look after the families of martyrs, saying: “Martyrs are our assets and looking after their families is our responsibility.”

On the direction of DIG Babar, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Hamad Abid and other senior policemen visited the graves of the martyrs.

In his address, Abid said the day reminds of ensuring public service delivery at any cost. The CTO praised brave cops, saying: “Matchless sacrifices by police made PSL a success.”

Traffic Warden Tanvir Iqbal, Head Constable Faisal Rasheed, Constables Tipu Fareed, Mudassar Nadeem, Zafar Iqbal and Muhammad Sultan embraced martyrdom in the militant attack on March 3, 2009.

Pakistan remained ‘no-go zone’ for sporting teams for years after the terror strike blamed on Indian spy agency – RAW – in a bid to sabotage Pakistan’s image.
