School timings changed once again as smog worsens in Punjab

As smog continues to blanket parts of Punjab with alarming intensity, the provincial government has announced a major decision to revise school timings across the province in a bid to curb rising air pollution levels.

According to a notification issued by Director General Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Dr. Imran Hameed Sheikh, all government and private schools in Punjab — including those in Lahore — will not open before 8:45 a.m. starting Monday, November 3, 2025. The revised timings will remain in force until January 31, 2026.

The EPA stated that school traffic in the early morning hours has been identified as one of the key contributors to increasing smog levels. “The new school timings are likely to reduce traffic pressure and, consequently, help lower air pollution,” the agency noted.

The directive applies to all educational institutions in the province, and strict action has been warned against violators. Schools found disregarding the order could face fines ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1 million, depending on the severity of the violation.

Environmental experts have raised concern over the deteriorating air quality in Punjab, especially in Lahore, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached extremely hazardous levels between 301 and 400 — posing serious health risks to residents.

Authorities hope the move will help ease morning traffic congestion and slightly mitigate pollution levels during peak smog season. The government has also urged citizens to adopt protective measures, limit outdoor activities, and cooperate with environmental initiatives aimed at improving air quality.
