Hoarding leads to sharp rise in rice prices in Narowal 

At a time when the rice crop, grown over 84,000 acres of land, has been destroyed by the flood in Narowal district, shopkeepers have hoarded the crop, hence creating its shortage and resulting in a sharp rise in its prices, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.

It has been learnt that the price of each kilo of rice has gone up by Rs100.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, Narowal, Hassan Raza, out of 355,000 acres of land on which the crop was sown in the district, 140,000 acres of land were affected by the flood, while the crop grown over 84,000 acres of land was destroyed. 

On the other hand, citizens have said that only a month ago, 25 kilos of rice cost Rs6,500, but now its price has shot up to Rs9,000.

They have said that the rice grown in the district is renowned for its quality not only in Pakistan, but also throughout the world. 

But now, its prices will skyrocket not only within the country but also outside.   

They have appealed to the government to rein in the hoarders and bring the rising prices under control.
