Gohar Ejaz expresses concern over widening trade deficit

Former caretaker minister Dr Gohar Ejaz has expressed serious concern over the rising trade deficit, saying there are no signs of an export-based economy, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

In a post uploaded on X platform on Tuesday, Dr Gohar Ejaz said that Pakistan’s trade deficit increased by $5 billion during the eight months from July 2025 to February 2026 compared to the same period of last year.

He said that exports have decreased by $1.5 billion compared to last year. During this period, Pakistan's imports have increased by $3.5 billion.

Gohar Ejaz said that an enhancement in exports is essential for the national economy. He said that GDP should be based on exports.

He suggested that the national economy will grow through an enhancement in exports. Gohar Ejaz said that an increase in exports will generate employment opportunities.\

He said that increased exports will reduce dependence on loans. Gohar Ejaz said that strong measures are essential for the growth of a long-term economy.

Gohar Ejaz suggested that exports should be given topmost priority for national security.
