Jamaat-e-Islami challenges Punjab Local Government Act 2025 in LHC
Jamaat-e-Islami Friday filed a petition in the Lahore High Court challenging the Punjab Local Government Act 2025, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The petition was submitted by Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore, Advocate Ziauddin Ansari, and names the Punjab government, the Secretary Local Government, and other officials as respondents.
Ansari argued that holding local government elections on a non-party basis is unconstitutional. The petition contends that the system of indirect elections for chairman, vice chairman, and reserved seats encourages horse trading and undermines transparency.
The petitioner further maintained that transferring key administrative powers to the bureaucracy under the new law violates Article 10A of the Constitution.
The court is expected to take up the petition in due course.
