The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday said that it has full capability to hold general elections as per law in the country, reported 24NewsHd TV channel.

Responding to the statements given by PTI leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Farrukh Habib, Fawad Chaudhary and Shirin Mazari, the commission said that the ECP was fully aware of its constitutional and legal responsibilities and it was fulfilling as well as per past practice.

According to the ECP spokesperson, after the integration of erstwhile Fata into KP, the total number of seats in the National Assembly has been reduced from 271 to 266.

The ECP said due to the reduction in the total number of seats, the new delimitation of constituencies is indispensable.

The ECP spokesperson said due to the interim results of the 2017 census, the ECP cannot start the delimitation process. The ECP has sent numerous letters to the government for the final Census results and after delayed notification of the census the ECP started this process, however, the government at that moment again announced to conduct the new census.

The spokesperson said that as the new census is yet to be conducted, the process of the new delimitation of constituencies could not be initiated.

He said the other institutions and persons should also fulfil their responsibilities on time.

It asked the political leaders to avoid irrelevant criticism on ECP and assured that the ECP is fully committed to complete its legal tasks, given in the constitution of the country
