The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday directed the provincial government to submit the notification on Dec 7 for the three-day weekly holidays for schools amid the increasing threat of smog in Punjab, especially in Lahore, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Earlier, the advocate of the Punjab government assured the court that the draft of three weekly holidays has been prepared and a notification will be issued today in this regard.
The development comes as the Lahore High Court (LHC) heard a petition filed by a citizen to seek a remedy for the smog issue in the province, especially in the province’s capital city.
Furthermore, the court expressed displeasure over the provincial government’s ability to address the smog issue in the province.
The environment department submitted the draft of the amendment to the rules in court. The court has been apprised that there should be an amendment in the law to demolish polluting industries and kilns.
Justice Shahid Karim directed the authorities to take the services of Chinese experts to control the smog in the city. “The opinion of experts is very vital to control the increasing smog in the country. The experts should be asked how they overcome the menace in Shanghai and Beijing cities,” the court observed.
LHC had directed the administration to take down industries that are omitting pollution with a draft for legislation in this regard to be forwarded to the court at the earliest. The court had issued orders to demolish those brick kilns creating contamination in the atmosphere and impound vehicles creating pollution in the environment.
