CJP says Chinese technology to be used to resolve pending cases

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi on Tuesday said that Chinese judicial technology will be introduced in Pakistan to help clear the backlog of court cases, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Speaking to Supreme Court reporters following his recent visit to China and Turkey, Chief Justice Afridi shared key takeaways from the judicial delegation’s tour. 

“We were a five-member delegation,” he said. “The way we were received and hosted in China was simply indescribable.”

The CJP revealed that the Supreme Court of China has 367 judges and no pending cases. In contrast, Pakistani courts are burdened with thousands of pending cases — a revelation that left Chinese judges astonished.

“The Chinese judges asked us, ‘How do you plan to resolve so many pending cases?' Justice Afridi recalled. “I told them that’s exactly why we’ve come to learn from your system.”

Justice Afridi noted that technology would be adopted to address the massive backlog, which remains one of the key challenges of Pakistan’s judicial system. 

“The purpose of our visit was to understand and introduce their advanced judicial technology,” he said.

However, he added a note of caution: “When there is no proper data, artificial intelligence (AI) can’t be effectively implemented. Technology is not like a pill you just take and suddenly have a solution.”

He also remarked that the technology level of all five high courts in Pakistan is better than that of the Supreme Court, indicating room for improvement at the apex level as well.
