The Punjab government has decided to buy electricity from the private sector, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.

According to the documents obtained by 24News TV channel, the provincial government will purchase electricity, produced from solar power, from the private firms which are currently generating 1,300 megawatts of electricity.

A grid company would be set up for the distribution and transmission of the electricity after its purchase. Punjab Grid Company would purchase electricity, and it would be responsible for transmitting it to the consumers and billing.

Documents tell that due to the power generated from solar energy, not only the burden on the national grid system will decrease but this would also help get rid of issues of loadshedding and tripping.

In this connection, the Punjab Energy Department has already sent a summary to the chief minister’s secretariat.

Furthermore, it has been learnt that the Energy Department has also demanded funds worth Rs100 million from the Punjab government.
