Budget 2025-26: Govt allocates over Rs147bn for water projects

In a major policy move, the upcoming Federal Budget 2025–26 proposes a total allocation of Rs147.78 billion for critical water resource projects across the country, official documents reveal.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the Diamer Bhasha Dam, one of the country's most significant infrastructure projects, has been recommended to receive Rs35 billion, while Rs7.78 billion has been separately proposed for land acquisition linked to the project. 

The Mohmand Dam is also expected to benefit from an allocation of Rs35.72 billion.

The Dasu Hydropower Project Phase I has been proposed to receive Rs20 billion. For the upgrade of Mangla Dam Power Station, Rs5 billion has been earmarked.

To improve Karachi’s water supply infrastructure, Rs9.47 billion is recommended for the repair and reconstruction of the Kalri Feeders. In addition, Rs Rs8.2 billion is being allocated for the K-IV Phase I Water Supply Project aimed at addressing the city’s water scarcity.

For Balochistan, the Pat Feeder Canal System is set to receive Rs1.87 billion, while the construction of the Panjgur Dam is proposed to get Rs1.2 billion and the Awaran Dam Rs1.5 billion.

A budget of Rs4.41 billion has been proposed for the installation of a telemetry system on the Indus River to improve water monitoring and distribution.

The Tarbela 5th Extension Project will potentially be allocated Rs3.4 billion, and Rs1 billion has been proposed for the Harpo Hydropower Project in Skardu.
