Govt reviews sugar prices, notes declining trend

A high-level meeting on sugar prices, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, reviewed the current situation of sugar imports, domestic production and market prices, according to a spokesperson from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

The meeting conducted a detailed assessment of imported sugar, local production levels and prevailing prices across the country. The committee expressed satisfaction over the recent trend of declining sugar prices, noting improvement at both wholesale and consumer levels.

The spokesperson said sugar has started becoming cheaper at the ex-mill and retail stages, providing relief to consumers after weeks of price volatility.

During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar directed that farmers should be given timely and appropriate prices for sugarcane. He emphasized that protecting the interests of growers is essential for sustaining agricultural production and ensuring stability in the sugar sector.

The deputy prime minister also instructed provincial departments to take necessary measures to safeguard farmers’ rights and prevent any exploitation, reaffirming the government’s commitment to balancing consumer relief with fair returns for producers.
