Rare 11,000-carat ruby discovered in Myanmar

A rare ruby weighing around 11,000 carats has been discovered in Myanmar, making it the world’s second-largest ruby by weight, 24NewsHD TV reported on Saturday. 

According to state media reports, the gemstone was reportedly found last month near the town of Mogok in the northern highlands, a region widely known as the centre of Myanmar’s precious stone industry.

Foreign media reports said the ruby weighs approximately 4.8 pounds (about 2.2 kilograms).

While it is smaller than a 21,450-carat ruby discovered in 1996, experts said the new stone may be more valuable due to its superior colour and quality.

The ruby is described as having a purplish-red tone with a slight yellowish tint.

Experts noted that it has moderate transparency and a highly polished surface, making it an exceptionally rare specimen.
