UNGA session can be convened to discuss Israeli aggression: Munir

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to UN Munir Akram said on Tuesday that a special session of the UN General Assembly could be convened on the issue of Israeli aggression against Palestinians. 

Speaking on 24NewsHD TV’s current affairs programme Naseem Zahra @ 8, Munir said that ambassadors of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) met on this issue and decided to write a letter to the UN Security Council president to stop the Israeli attacks. 

Munir said that OIC ambassadors agreed on building a common stance on the Middle Eastern issue, condemn the Israeli action and hold meetings with the UN Security Council members on the issue.

Answering a question from Naseem Zahra, the Pakistani diplomat said that OIC member countries were hopeful that the UN Security Council would take a stance on this issue. And if the UNSC does not take any action, he said, a special session of the General Assembly would be convened to discuss the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians. He said that a resolution would be tabled to condemn the Israeli attacks and support the Palestinian cause at the possible UNSC session.

Responding to a query about Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries’ position on the Palestine-Israel conflict, Munir said that people knew compulsions of the Muslim countries neighbouring Palestine. “And we have to see what we can do in spite of that. At present, the Islamic world is united on the issue of Palestine so far,” he said. He said that unity in the Muslim world was the only way to support the Palestinians at the moment.
