54 fishermen released from Indian jails sent to Karachi from Lahore

Fifty-four Pakistani fishermen, recently released by Indian authorities, have been sent to Karachi from Lahore with the help of the Edhi Foundation, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday. 

 According to an Edhi Foundation spokesperson, the fishermen were transported in special vehicles and will be safely escorted to their homes across various districts of Sindh.

The spokesperson said the fishermen had been handed over to Pakistani officials by India on September 9, following their release from Indian custody.

They were detained by Indian authorities for allegedly violating maritime boundaries while fishing in the Arabian Sea.

After their repatriation, Pakistani security agencies carried out standard verification procedures before formally transferring their care to the Edhi Foundation.

The Edhi Foundation, continuing its long-standing humanitarian service, took charge of providing transportation, food, and logistical assistance to ensure the fishermen’s safe return to their families.

 “As per Faisal Edhi’s directions, all released fishermen will be taken to their respective homes in Sindh,” the spokesperson stated.

The fishermen’s release marks another instance of goodwill gestures between the two countries, though hundreds of fishermen from both sides remain imprisoned for similar violations due to the lack of clearly demarcated maritime borders.

Many of these fishermen often spend years in foreign jails before repatriation procedures are completed.
