Vegetable rates skyrocket in Lahore

Vegetable prices have once again skyrocketed in the provincial capital city, pushing basic food items beyond the reach of ordinary citizens.

Tomatoes, in particular, have witnessed an unprecedented surge, now selling for Rs500 per kilogram — a sharp increase from Rs300 just a week ago.

According to price surveys across various city markets, almost all essential vegetables have registered steep hikes.

Cabbage, which was available for Rs120 per kg, now costs Rs300, while cucumbers have risen from Rs80 to Rs140 per kg.

Turnips have doubled from Rs150 to Rs300, fenugreek (methi) from Rs100 to Rs200, and beans from Rs200 to Rs300 per kg.

, drumsticks (moongray), previously sold at Rs 200per kg, are now being sold for Rs 400.

Vendors attributed the surge to disrupted transportation and supply chain issues following a protest by a religious group that led to blockades on key routes.

“The supply of vegetables from rural areas to Lahore’s wholesale markets has been severely affected for the past few days, resulting in price hikes,” said a local shopkeeper.

Meanwhile, citizens have expressed anger over what they describe as the government’s inability to curb inflation.
