Ali Zafar sets new record at Canada's Celebration Square
Pakistani superstar Ali Zafar performed before a record-breaking crowd at Celebration Square in Mississauga on Saturday night, with an estimated 45,000 attendees filling the open-air venue and spilling into surrounding areas.
According to event organizers, the crowd extended well beyond the Square itself, prompting the closure of parts of Duke of York Boulevard and the grounds of the adjacent Living Arts Centre to accommodate the overflow. Organizers described it as the largest concert audience ever assembled at Celebration Square.
The performance marked the grand finale of Zafar’s North American Roshni Tour 2026.
The free open-air concert brought together one of the most diverse and multigenerational gatherings of the South Asian diaspora in the Greater Toronto Area in recent memory. From children and young families to teenagers, working professionals and seniors, the audience represented communities from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and across the broader South Asian diaspora. Families, students and community groups filled every corner of the Square and surrounding streets, dancing and singing along from the opening note to the final encore.
Performing for nearly two hours, Zafar opened the show with the high-energy Rangeen and delivered an expansive setlist featuring more than 20 songs. Tracks from his new album, Roshni, including the title track Roshni, Mamacita and Ruxaana, received their first-ever live performances. The concert also featured some of Zafar’s biggest hits, including Channo, Masty and Chal Dil Mere, alongside several of his most popular Bollywood and regional songs.
One of the evening’s most memorable moments came during Jhoom, when thousands of audience members illuminated the venue with their phone flashlights, transforming Celebration Square into a sea of light. The excitement reached another level when Zafar stepped off the stage and into the crowd, drawing thunderous cheers from fans.
Beyond the music, Zafar used the platform to speak about unity, identity and mutual respect. Addressing the audience between performances, he emphasized the importance of embracing cultural roots while promoting understanding and inclusivity.
“We are one humanity,” Zafar told the crowd. “Wherever we live in the world, we carry our roots with us, and we should be proud of them. Respect for each other’s choices is what holds us together.”
He also spoke about women's freedom to choose their own paths, children's right to pursue their dreams and the importance of communication and understanding within families.
The concert concluded with an extended celebration as thousands of fans sang along to the final songs, creating an atmosphere many attendees described as historic.
Following the success of the Mississauga show, Zafar is set to continue the second leg of his international tour through August and October, with additional cities expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
