Sindh Assembly unanimously seeks cut in petroleum prices

The Sindh Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution calling for lower petroleum product prices and the abolition of the federal petroleum levy, reported 24NewsHD TV.

PTI lawmaker Muhammad Awais moved the resolution, which the provincial government supported.

Speaking during the debate, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon said the public was under severe pressure because of high petroleum prices.

He said the federal government was charging a levy of more than Rs100 per litre on petroleum products and demanded that the levy be abolished.

Memon said the MQM was an ally of the federal government and should raise the issue with Islamabad.

He recalled that the MQM had been part of the PPP-led government in 2008 and said the party had left the government when petrol prices were increased by only Re1 per litre.

He criticised the MQM for remaining in the current federal setup while fuel prices continued to burden the public.

“Those sitting in the federal cabinet should speak up,” Memon said.

He said the Sindh government fully supported the resolution and demanded that the federal government withdraw the petroleum levy.

“The federal government needs to come to its senses,” he said.

Following the debate, the House passed the resolution unanimously, with treasury and opposition members supporting the call for lower petroleum prices.
