CCD granted authority to investigate sexual offences in Punjab

The Punjab provincial cabinet has approved an expansion of the powers of the Crime Control Department (CCD), granting it authority to investigate cases involving women and children, officials said on Wednesday.

As part of the decision, the cabinet has approved the establishment of a Special Sexual Offences Investigation Unit within the CCD, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The unit previously functioned under the Investigation Wing and was responsible for handling cases related to sexual violence against women and children.

Under the new arrangement, officers and resources from the Special Sexual Offences Investigation Unit will be transferred to the Crime Control Department.

Officials said the move aims to improve coordination, strengthen investigations and enhance the state’s response to crimes involving vulnerable groups.

Across Punjab, 263 units had earlier been tasked with investigating cases of sexual abuse involving women and children.

Authorities said the restructuring is intended to streamline investigations and ensure greater accountability in handling such sensitive cases.
