Samina Baig on K2 dream expedition

In high spirits, Samina Baig lands in Skardu to make the history as she with her six-member team is all set to go on climbing the the world's second highest peak K2.

Talking to 24NewsHD TV channel, the first woman mountaineer to climb the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, and the seven summits said the mission is aimed at promoting women's empowerment and raising awareness about global warming and taping the local talent.

"Women can participate in such a tough sport … and even in all spheres of life, she said, adding that the expedition is also aimed at raising awareness about the climate change … that has been affecting the world.

The third objective of this K2 dream expedition is to prove that the local people … the high altitude guides … have the ability to accomplish such tough tasks, she said, adding that the locals are being provided with a chance to prove themselves.

Samina Baig, who has also been awarded the Pride of Performance award, said her spirits are high and she made an appeal to her fans and well-wishers to pray for her success.

The Special Communications Organisation (SCO) is sponsoring Samina Baig's K2 summit. Reportedly in January, she and the SCO seals the deal for the summit. She said the SCO has been incredibly supportive throughout so far.

The Gilgit-Baltistan native stressed the need for SCO-like sponsors so that such sport could be promoted and such steps will help tap the talent of local youth and benefit the region. She appreciated SCO for installing BTS system at Concordia near Broad Peak and K-2 expedition Base camp. The mobile coverage and internet access will enable the mountaineers and trekking groups to stay connected with their families and assist in emergency situations.
