Thanks Pakistan’s Army Chief for averting war, signals trade talks during historic White House meeting
In a major diplomatic gesture underscoring Pakistan’s strategic importance, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, at a high-profile luncheon in the White House Cabinet Room.
The meeting, also attended by U.S. Vice President and top officials, marks a significant recognition of Pakistan’s military leadership on the global stage.
President Trump publicly acknowledged Field Marshal Munir’s critical role in defusing regional tensions, particularly concerning Iran.
“Thanks to Field Marshal Asim Munir, we did not go to war,” Trump declared, confirming that backchannel talks were held with Pakistani officials, including Munir, to ease the situation with Tehran.
“Both Pakistan and India are nuclear powers,” the U.S. President said, emphasising the delicate balance of peace in South Asia and praising Pakistan’s role as a stabilising force.
He further highlighted that discussions are underway on a potential U.S.-Pakistan trade deal, noting, “Talks are ongoing, and we're optimistic.”
The invitation extended to Field Marshal Munir — ahead of any Indian delegation — sends a clear message: Pakistan is emerging as a strategic priority in U.S. foreign policy.
Trump referred to the meeting as an “honour,” stating, “I had the honor of meeting Field Marshal Asim Munir today. We invited him here to thank him for his efforts in maintaining peace.”
Sources within the administration noted that the high-level engagement reflects growing U.S. trust in Pakistan’s military establishment as a key partner in both regional and global stability.
Field Marshal Munir’s visit is being termed historic by analysts, as it not only underscores the deepening of Pak-U.S. ties but also positions Pakistan as a net regional stabiliser in South Asia, a title long sought in Islamabad’s diplomatic circles.
The luncheon and strategic dialogue point towards a new chapter in Pak-U.S. relations — one defined by security cooperation, regional peace, and economic engagement.
