Sanam Teri Kasam directors break silence  over copyright controversy

Sanam Teri Kasam directors have broken their silence on the copyright controversy, stating that there are no hard feelings.

The romantic tragedy made a grand comeback to theatres. Unlike the 2016 response, the box office collection of the Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane starrer is on fire this time.

Directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru hinted at part two of Sanam Teri Kasam while Producer Deepak Mukut raised a copyright dispute. The directors have now broken their silence on the controversy, clarifying that there are no hard feelings between the trio.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Vinay said: “Sanam Teri Kasam begins with a flashback. We wrote part two of the film at that time only. We wanted to go ahead with a second part, but unfortunately for whatever reason, we couldn’t. Nobody even asked for it all this while, until now. This (confusion) has been happening because of the interviews."

He added: “I want to put it on record once and for all: There will be another story of love and promises that will arrive on Valentine’s in 2026, but we didn’t announce a film. How can I be so selfish to announce? I love my team – my producer, my actors. Deepak is a dear friend; I had dinner with him on Monday night."

Asked if Deepak would return to produce the sequel, Vinay responded “Why do you feel otherwise? We are a team. This journey is for all of us."

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Deepak Mukut had spoken about the sequel saying, “The IP of Sanam Teri Kasam belongs to me since I am its producer. So, the rights to make a sequel or even a prequel or a remake rests with me.

“In fact, I announced the sequel in September 2024 with Harshvardhan Rane in the lead. As for the directors (Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru), I haven’t had any discussion with them. They haven’t met and spoken to me about it. I have not finalised any director."

Asked if he reaches out to Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, he said: “It is their duty to reach out to me rather than the other way round, especially since they are giving interviews about making the sequel. I ust want to reiterate that the rights belong to me."

About the sequel, he added the writing process is going on. Once it is complete, the sequel will go on floors.
