Chairman of the Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has appointed Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas as the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, marking a key development in parliamentary affairs following weeks of consultations and procedural delays, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Tuesday.

According to sources, the notification appointing Allama Raja Nasir Abbas was formally signed by the Senate chairman after a meeting with a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) delegation led by Senator Ali Zafar. Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas was also present during the meeting.

Speaking to the media, Senator Ali Zafar confirmed that Chairman of the Senate Yousaf Raza Gillani had signed the notification, completing the formal requirements for the appointment.

Sources said that the official announcement of the opposition leader’s name will be made on the floor of the Senate during an upcoming sitting.

It is pertinent to mention that a day earlier, 24NewsHD TV channel reported that a consensus had been reached between PTI and the ruling alliance regarding the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. It was decided that a formal notification would be issued after the completion of legal and procedural requirements.

The matter was discussed during a consultative meeting held in the chamber of the Chairman of the Senate, which was attended by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, among others.

Following the meeting, the law minister also held a separate discussion with Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani regarding the appointment.

Sources said the delay in issuing the notification was caused by procedural complexities, as individual declarations from opposition members were required and their verification process.
