Preventive measures urged as PDMA issues heatwave alert

In view of an alert issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Punjab about unusually high temperatures expected in the province during the next few days, Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed on Tuesday directed the district administrations and the concerned departments to take steps to prevent the people from falling prey to the heatwave, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The PDMA, in its alert, said that temperatures were expected to be five to seven degrees above normal in the province from May 20 to May 24. 

It further said that because of the heatwave, there were also chances of windstorms lashing different parts of the province. 

The relief commissioner directed the district administrations, Department of School Education, health, transport, local government, Rescue 1122 and others to ensure the availability of safe drinking water at public places. 

He also directed that the provision of first aid to those suffering from heatstroke must be ensured at all hospitals and mobile health units. 

He also asked the masses to remain careful in view of the heatwave. “Particularly, those working out in the open should protect themselves from heat,” he said, adding, “Keep your heads covered and wear loose garments.”   

He said that especially children and the elderly must remain careful and avoid exposure to heat. “Avoid travelling especially during the daytime.”

He further said that people were already being urged through print and electronic media to take precautionary measures. “In case of an emergency, contact PDMA helpline number 1129 or Rescue 1122.”
