AJK elections to be held as scheduled, says election commission

The Chief Election Commissioner of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Justice (R) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, has made a key ruling rejecting a request to postpone the upcoming general elections.

According to official details, a petition filed by PPP ministers under the leadership of Finance Minister Qasim Majeed, Sardar Yaqoob, and Law Minister Mian Abdul Waheed sought a delay in the electoral process. However, after hearing all arguments, the Election Commission declared the petition inadmissible.

The Chief Election Commissioner took a firm stance, stating that the elections will be held on time without any changes to the previously announced schedule.

As per the Election Commission’s announcement, the general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir will take place on July 27, 2026, as planned. The commission emphasized that there will be no alteration in the election timeline under any circumstances.

The decision has created further political activity in the region, with election-related campaigning and preparations expected to intensify following the ruling.

Reiterating its commitment to transparency and fairness, the Election Commission said it remains dedicated to ensuring free, fair, and timely elections, adding that the public will be given their constitutional right to vote on the scheduled date.
