IHC to hear plea against motorway speed limit reduction

The Islamabad High Court will hear a petition on Monday challenging the Motorway Police's decision to reduce speed limits on motorways as part of the government's austerity measures.

Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar is set to hear the petition filed by citizen Qaiser Akram, who has asked the court to declare the reduction in speed limits illegal.

The petitioner argued that there is no legal provision allowing authorities to lower motorway speed limits for the purpose of saving fuel under austerity measures. The petition maintained that the Motorway Police's order to reduce the speed limit was unlawful and should be struck down.

The petitioner has also requested the court to order the refund of fines imposed on motorists driving between 100 and 120 kilometres per hour after March 26, when the revised speed limits came into effect.

The Islamabad High Court has already issued notices to the Motorway Police and other respondents, seeking their replies to the petition.

The case is scheduled for hearing on June 23.
