PM again rules out locking down Pakistan

March 22, 2020 04:43 PM

Prime Minister Imran Khan has once again ruled out locking down the whole Pakistan, saying “If I do that the poor people will starve to death”.

In yet another address to the nation on Sunday afternoon, Imran Khan said a lockdown means forcing people to stay at their homes and army and police personnel will not let them out. “I would have opted for lock downing Pakistan had the situation here been like the situation in Italy.”

Imran Khan alerted the citizens not to be panicked and said, “Any chaos or panic is the bigger threat than Covid-19.”

He said that people should exercise self-discipline and must practise the ‘self-quarantine’. Imposing curfew means the army and police will guard and watch the streets, only if conditions would have like Italy and France he would have gone for the complete lockdown, he added.

“We have another problem that 25 percent Pakistanis are living under the poverty line and cannot afford two times meals if a 14-day closure of the country put into reality.”

“Imposing lockdown means the rickshaw divers, taxi drivers, small shopkeepers, daily-wagers and fruit vendors will not get any resources to meet ends meet.

“We have no capacity to supply food to the 25 percent population of the country for such a long time. China did it because she was the second richest country in the world and they did it because they had plenty of money and food at their hand. However, we cannot do this,” PM Khan said, ruling out the lockdown option to counter the Covid-19.

“You should do a self-quarantine. We have made arrangements for old citizens who cannot counter the coronavirus but the 90 percent people can automatically cure by self-quarantine.

“The space in hospitals is for old citizens,” he said.

PM Khan lamented the people’s stubborn behaviour of continuing their daily activities despite the threat of coronavirus spread. He questioned, “If my people will not comply with the situation and keep arranging picnics, weddings in the houses, how can we fight the virus?”

He said that this approach of people is unjust against old citizens. “Please use your brain!” Imran added.

He explained that Allah Almighty always tests his people in difficult times. “I have seen my nation in the 2005 earthquake and 2010 floods. We have gone through all the crises together and we need to show the same spirit in this time of crisis also.”

“Show some discipline and by the will of Allah like China, we will get through this. I am very hopeful of you. I and my team are thinking about how to counter the coronavirus and to how to facilitate different sectors of the economy hit due to the prevailing situation.”

He urged the media to play its due role to spread awareness among people about to handle the situation arising out of the pandemic.
