Heavy rain pounds Lahore, other Punjab cities

Heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, lashed parts of the Punjab during the last 24 hours, inundating low-lying areas of Lahore and other cities of the province, while, on the other hand, the death toll in rain-related incidents across the country since the beginning of the monsoon season on June 26 reached 242, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.

As many as 21 people lost their lives only during the last 24 hours. 

Lahore received 107.5 millimeters of rain till the filing of this report. 

The city’s Allama Iqbal International Airport received the highest amount of rainfall.

Showers were also reported from Muslim Town, Ichhra, Jain Mandir, Chuburji, Gulberg, Model Town, Kalima Chowk, Jail Road, Dharampura, Harbanspura, Mughalpura, Shalamar Bagh and other localities of the city.  

Besides Lahore, 70 millimeters of rain was recorded at Sialkot, followed by Attock, which received 53 millimeters of rain, while Joharabad received 40 millimeters of rain.  

Similarly, 27 millimeters of rain was recorded at Noorpur Thal; 21 millimeters at Hafizabad; 17 millimeters at Sheikhupura; 16 millimeters at Kakul, and 10 millimeters at Jhang and Murree each.

Toba Tek Singh received nine millimeters of rain; Faisalabad eight millimeters; Muzaffarabad seven millimeters, while Balakot, Garhi Dopatta and Mangla received three millimeters of rain each. 

Likewise, two millimeters of rain was recorded at Sehwan Sharif, while Jhelum, Kasur and Mandi Bahauddin received one millimeter of rain each. 

Rain was also reported from the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The highest amount of rainfall, 49 millimeters, was recorded at Kutchehry followed by Saidpur and Golra, which received 48 millimeters of rain each. 

Pir Widhai received 46 millimeters of rain, followed by Gawalmandi where 30 mm of rain was recorded; 29 mm of rain was recorded at Bokra and Islamabad airport each, while 24 millimeters at Katarian and Chakri each.

The present spell of rains will continue until July 25.

NDMA’s statistics on death toll

As per the statistics released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on the number of people dying in rain-related incidents during the last 24 hours, 10 people, including six children, died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while five people, including three kids, lost their lives in Islamabad.

Similarly, two children were killed in Sindh, while three people died in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB); one fatality was reported from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). 

The NDMA said that six people were also injured in different parts of the country during the aforementioned period; two were wounded in KP and AJK each, while one was injured in Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad each.

On the number of people injured since the start of the monsoon season on June 26, the Authority said a total of 598 people were injured, while 854 homes were also destroyed. 

The NDMA said that 208 cattle had also perished in rain-related incidents. 

More rains predicted

Meanwhile, the weather department said that the present spell of monsoon rains would continue to lash Punjab and other parts of the country until July 25.

It said that more rains, accompanied by strong winds, were expected in KP, GB, AJK, Punjab, Islamabad and north-east Balochistan during the next 24 hours.

During this period, it added, there may be heavy rain in upper KP, GB, Potohar region of Punjab, north-east Punjab and Kashmir.
